The First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in 1954 and it is a general TCM hospital with the highest technical categories on the largest scale. The hospital is a Class 3A hospital, International Aid Network Hospital, Designated Asia Emergency Aid (AEA) Hospital, Tianjin Medical Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine, It is also named as “National Clinical Research Center of Acupuncture and Moxibustion", “National Special Medical Center of Acupuncture and Moxibustion", “National Emergency Medical Center of TCM," “National Pediatric Medical Center of TCM" by the State TCM Administration Bureau.
The hospital covers an area of more than 80,000 square meters, which has 1700 beds in In-patient Department. There are more than 6000 outpatients a day on average and there have been more than one million outpatients each year for twenty years. The rate of ward utilization has been at 100% for over fifteen years.
Currently the staff of the hospital equals more than 1,700, which including 1435 medical & technical personnel and 748 employees Advanced degree doctors. There also includes 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Medicine & Engineering, 2 experts with Outstanding Contribution awarded by the State, 4 experts awarded by Tianjin Municipal Government, 13 experts enjoy a special allowance from Tianjin Municipal Government, 20 supervisor of Medical doctors and 113 supervisor of graduate students.
The hospital has established medical cooperative relationship and carried medical cooperation and academic exchange with medical organizations of more than 20 countries including Japan, Korea, Germany, France, Russia and Switzerland, etc. The hospital also undertook the study and training of Chinese and foreign students and more than 600 doctors, nurses and technologists of the hospital have been invited to over 20 twenty countries including United States, Japan, Germany, England and Korea, etc. for giving lectures and academic exchanges. The hospital has successfully sponsored nine sessions of International Clinical Academic Conferences of Acupuncture and Moxibustion since 1989. They have received over 5000 scholars and students from 40 countries during these years.
In the hospital, there are 22 clinical technical departments, such as Acupuncture and Moxibustion Dept. (treating apoplexy with curative rate 93%), Internal Medicine Dept. (treating coronary heart disease with curative rate 90%), Surgery Dept., Emergency Dept., Hepatopathy Center (treating diabetes with curative rate 90%), Psychosomatic Center (treating andropathy with curative rate 80%), International Convalescent Center, Orthopedics Dept., Tuina (Chinese massage) Dept., Peptic Dept., Pediatrics Dept., Ophthalmology Dept., Cerebral Surgery Dept., Obstetrics and Gynecology Dept., Otorhinolaryngology Dept., Dermatology Dept., Stomatology Dept., Anesthesia Dept., Nutrition Dept., Medicament Dept., Central Laboratory, Functional Examination Dept. and Radiation Dept. and 69 clinics for special diseases. And 15 branches of National Clinical Research Center of Acupuncture and Moxibustion have been established in China. The hospital pays more attention to the utilization of the modern technique. It has more than 1.000 medical instruments on the advanced world level for clinical examination, diagnosis and treatment, such as 1.5 T Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Whole-body Computed Tomography, Center Monitoring System, Large Automatic Biochemical Analyzer, Automatic Thrombus and Hemostasis Analyzer, Automatic Enzyme Immunoassay, Atomic Absorber, Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber, Color Ultrasonograph, Osteo-density Instrument, Skull Color Ultrasonic Doppler System, Dynamic Electrocardiogram System, Multi-media Color Pathologic Analytic System with the Picture and Essay.

The hospital is the comprehensive base of the medical treatment, teaching, and scientific research characterized as the diagnosis antreatment of TCM, and is a national center appointed to train M.D. and postgraduates of TCM. The hospital is outstanding and noted both in China and abroad for the curative effects of its “ Xing Nao Kai Qiao" technique (XNKQ), activating the brain and opening the orifices) in the treatment of apoplexy This technique was developed and perfected by Prof. SHI Xuemin (pictured at right), tutor of M.D. of TCM, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Medicine & Engineering. Hundreds of achievements of science and technology have been accomplished at the FTH. It has become one of the most modern large hospitals of TCM dedicated to medical treatment, science, technology and teaching.
Building C (1 of 6 buildings) of the hospital is composed mainly of acupuncture and moxibustion, Tuna and orthopedics. In this facility, there are more than 600 beds for the inpatients suffering from cerebrovascular diseases. The acute cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction are treated with integrative methods of Chinese and Western medicine. Apoplexy in the recovery stage is treated with traditional techniques of acupuncture, moxibustion, medicated baths, Tuina and functional exercises for rehabilitation. Acupuncture and moxibustion have the remarkable curative effects on cerebrovascular diseases, senile dementia, facial paralysis, headache, exhaustion syndrome, insomnia, neuralgia, colitis, cervical and lumbetr spondylopathy, diabetes, hyperviscosity, hypertention, cardiac disease, asthma, gastropathy, prostatosis and aorto-arteritis. The Cerebral Surgery Department treats acute encephalopathy, such as cerebral hemorrhage, with stereotaxic surgery. The Orthopedics Department and Tuina Department treat cervical and lumber spondylopathy, infantile muscular torticollis, periarthritis of shoulder with traditional manipulations of Tuina and bone setting, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporosis and ischemic necrosis of femoral head are treated with traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese medications.
