srrsThe first Public Hospital on the Chinese Mainland Accredited by the Joint Commission International

Established in 1994, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital is a leading provider of medical care and services in Zhejiang province, and the first public hospital in the mainland of China to be accredited by the US-based Joint Commission International (December, 2006), in recognition of a level of care that meets international standards for quality.

Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital aims to provide the community with an internationally accepted standard of uniform excellence of care.

A. Hospital Development and JCI Accreditation

On May 2nd 1994, because of the generous contribution of Sir Run Run Shaw, a well known Hong Kong philanthropist, and the hard work of the hospital founders, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital opened to the public. Through its affiliation with Loma Linda University, American management and clinical specialists brought the new hospital not only advanced medical technology but also the philosophy of “Care Based on the Human Being: Whole-patient Care". Since its inauguration more than 10 years ago, the hospital has developed rapidly, earning a reputation in China for high medical standards, whole-hearted sincerity, positive spirit and love for the patients.

In 2003, the hospital determined to become a world-class hospital, an equal of the best in international medical practice. The hospital leadership applied for inspection and accreditation by the Joint Commission International.(The JCI is a WHO-authorized organization for medical quality evaluation.) On December 23, 2006, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital learned that we had been formally accredited by the JCI. We are the first public teaching hospital in China to be so recognized.

B. Advanced Management and Outstanding Achievements

operateSir Run Run Shaw Hospital has implemented a style of management that integrates Chinese and Western cultures. With its continuous focus on high-quality, patient-centered medical care, the hospital has achieved a level of performance which meets or exceeds national benchmarks. SRRSH annually accepts requests from approximately 2000 individuals and institutions who want to see our facilities and learn more about our philosophy of care.

C. Team Work and Advancement of Medical Technology

In pursuit of our goal of providing high quality service for the patients, the hospital encourages multi-specialty cooperation.

The establishment of integrated medical centers, such as the Minimally-invasive Surgery Center and the Oncology Center encourage communication among different clinical specialties.

Multi-specialty involvement: The Department of General Surgery, and sub-specialties such as Gynecology, Urology, Thoracic Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Surgical Oncology offer minimally-invasive surgical procedures. High Volume: The percentage of minimally-invasive operations is 50-60% of our total surgeries.

D. Construction of the International Platform

IESRRSH strives to maintain a leading position in medical care, management and medical education. The hospital has experienced rapid development in medical technology and administration with broad support from Loma Linda University, in the US. LLU has continued to assist and advise, with particular attention to the needs of SRRSH staff members, some of whom have been invited to spend time at that institution, observing the use of technologies, treatment philosophy, and communicating with selected mentors.

SRRSH has collaborated with LLU and other respected university-affiliated medical institutions, in establishing a Long-distance Education and Telemedical Consultation System, which makes possible consultation with

internationally-known specialists for patients with complex diseases. We have inter-staff communication with organizations such as the Marshfield Clinic of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, and the Mayo Clinic.

Experts from other institutions have visited our hospital to offer information and guidance. By the end of 2006, we had welcomed more than 800 specialists and technologists from the United States, Germany, Australia and Great Britain. During the same period, 498 SRRSH staff members had been sent overseas for training. Our focus on medical education has produced two successful Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital Academic Weeks in October of 2006 and 2007.

As the fine reputation of SRRSH spreads through China’s expatriate population, the number of foreign patients has continued to rise. To date there have been over 1000 foreign patients seeking treatment in SRRSH, and the number increases each year.

E. Resident Training and Graduate Medical Education

SRRSH provides standardized practice opportunities and testing in accordance with international norms. We receive medical students from the United States, Germany, Japan, and India, who come here for an elective rotation as part of their medical education. Annually we also welcome a number of medical student interns from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
